Ninth Annual Math Morning in the Life of High School Students


Since 1986 Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month is held every year in April. It started as Mathematics Awareness Week with a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan.  In 1999, Mathematics Awareness Week became Mathematics Awareness Month.  Its goal is to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics and is promoted by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics.  In 2017, it became Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month to celebrate diversity in these fields.  In support of Mathematics Awareness Month, Ohio University Zanesville has organized Math Morning in the Life of High School Students every year since April 2011.  The ninth annual Math Morning in the Life of High School Students will be held at Ohio University Zanesville on Friday, April 26, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and features a High School Algebra Quiz Contest and a High School Pre-Calculus Quiz Contest. High school math educators are invited to send a team for each of the two contests.   

Each participating team should have two students. Each school is allowed a maximum of one team for each contest. The eligibility requirements are as follows: 

·         High School Algebra Quiz Contest: High school students who have taken (or are taking) Algebra II but have not completed Pre-Calculus are eligible to participate.

·         High School Pre-Calculus Quiz Contest: High school students who are juniors or seniors and have taken (or are taking) Pre-Calculus but have not competed Calculus/AP Calculus are eligible to participate.

·    The focus in each of the two contests will be on foundations and no calculator will be required or allowed.

Each participant will be given a certificate of participation and the winning team in each category will receive a certificate and a prize of $200. First runners-up team in each category will receive a prize of $100.
