To help celebrate this coming together of Black Alumni, the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/library\/collections\/archives-special-collections\" target=\"_blank\">Mahn Center for Archives &amp; Special Collections<\/a>, has curated an exhibit in two parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first part of the exhibit, open through Sunday, September 18th, celebrates Black student and faculty life through photographs, yearbooks, posters, and other materials from the University Archives. These books, found in the three display cases, will be on view throughout fall semester. Read on for more information about the rare books on exhibit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Case one features a recent acquisition: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ohiolink-ou.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01OHIOLINK_OU\/kl42u0\/alma991006290679708516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adger<\/a><\/em>, the new book of photographs along with two original platinum prints by Ohio University alumnus Adger Cowans (&#8217;58). Adger was one of the first Black students to receive a degree in photography from Ohio University. He studied here with Clarence H. White, Jr. After graduating, Cowans went on to work with Gordon Parks at <em>Life Magazine<\/em> and was a founding member of the civil rights art collective, the Kamoinge Workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_2849-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_2849-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_2849-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_2849-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_2849-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_2849-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View of the open book, <em>Adger<\/em>, and two platinum prints by Adger Cowans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Adger<\/em> is a bit of a retrospective of Cowans\u2019 photographic work, coupled with transcripts of interviews with Cowans processed by Collier Brown into erasure or blackout poetry. While most of the text recedes into a dark background, certain words are highlighted. The highlighted words can be read separately, or in conjunction with each other as well as with Cowans\u2019 images, inviting the reader\/viewer to form new associations and meanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were very fortunate to welcome Adger Cowans himself, in conversation with Ohio University School of Art + Design Director and Professor Julie Dummermuth, on September 7th. Washington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Washington is not an alum, he married Athens-local Olivia America Davidson (1854-1889) on August 11, 1886, at Olivia\u2019s sister\u2019s home on Washington Street here in Athens. In 1881, Booker T. Washington had recruited Davidson to help him build the renowned Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Washington (1896)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Case three contains the beautiful oversize book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ohiolink-ou.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01OHIOLINK_OU\/kl42u0\/alma991033101379708516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sunrise Is Coming After While<\/a><\/em>, containing poems by Langston Hughes, selected and introduced by Maya Angelou. The poems are illustrated with colorful silkscreens by Phoebe Beasley, another Ohio University alum (&#8217;65).
