{"id":1296,"date":"2023-09-15T12:46:31","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T16:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/?p=1296"},"modified":"2024-07-26T14:08:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T18:08:42","slug":"visualizing-collections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.ohio.edu\/library-archives-blog\/2023\/09\/15\/visualizing-collections\/","title":{"rendered":"Visualizing Mahn Center Collections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Miriam Intrator, Special Collections Librarian<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most exciting aspects of working at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/library\/collections\/archives-special-collections\" target=\"_blank\">Mahn Center<\/a> is the opportunity to interact with students and instructors from a broad range of departments and programs and in a variety of different ways. This post highlights an ongoing collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students taking Assistant Professor <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/scripps-college\/viscom\/faculty\/durado\" target=\"_blank\">Adonis Durado&#8217;s<\/a> spring semester course, VICO 4112\/5112 Illustration Capstone: Advanced Informational Graphics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assignment is to create a print, digital, or multi-platform infographic. Students can include any combination of video, photography, sound, interactivity, or any other element that inspires them. The key is for the final product to not only be informational, but to tell a story. The students work in small groups and Libraries&#8217; staff play the role of their client or customer. We teach them about the materials, offer additional research consultations, review draft content, and provide feedback over the course of the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The task is not easy! As you will see in the projects below, each item is dense, complex in its history and content. Materials for these projects are selected based on a number of considerations: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>fully and unquestionably in the public domain -&gt; meaning there are no copyright restrictions or concerns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fully digitized and available online in our <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/library\/collections\/digital-archives\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Archives<\/a> -&gt; meaning students have full access to both the original physical items as well as to high resolution downloadable image files<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have existing metadata -&gt; meaning students have access to descriptive and identifying information that informs how they approach their project and that help guide further research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visual appeal -&gt; contain illustrations or other elements that draw the eye and help illustrate the meaning and significance of the materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high interest and high use items in the collection -&gt; meaning the infographics offer new ways for us to talk about, describe, explain, and teach with them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We at the Mahn Center are always impressed and excited by what the students come up with! semester students worked in small groups to research and create infographics for three items from the rare book collection: a 13th century illuminated manuscript <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/media.library.ohio.edu\/digital\/collection\/speccoll\/id\/1313\/rec\/1\" target=\"_blank\">Latin Bible<\/a>, a boxed set of individual medieval manuscript leaves (or pages) entitled <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/media.library.ohio.edu\/digital\/collection\/p15808coll19\/search\/searchterm\/Fifty%20original%20leaves%20from%20medieval%20manuscripts%2C%20Western%20Europe%2C%20XII-XVI%20century\/field\/collec\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\/order\/farfel\/ad\/asc\" target=\"_blank\">Fifty Original Leaves from Medieval Manuscripts<\/a><\/em>, and select books highlighted for their <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/library\/collections\/digital-archives\/rare-books\" target=\"_blank\">Publishers&#8217; Bindings<\/a>, as well as select materials from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"
