The students explored, selected, and researched materials from the collections, then worked in small groups to prepare presentations. The students had the option to then expand their research into a blog post like this one for their final project.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82159612 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82159612 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 1\">Civil Rights Coverage<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Papers from the Ohio University <span class=\"TextRun SCXW170410494 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170410494 BCX0\">Presidential archives and published student newspaper reports indicate that Ohio University&#8217;s 15th President, Vernon R. Alden (1962-1969), promoted the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, supporting Black rights and equality at Ohio University and beyond.\u00a0Alden met with Black activists,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170410494 BCX0\">spoke to the injustices facing Black students, and used his platform<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170410494 BCX0\">in his attempts to educate and uplift those around him. Risking<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW133816098 BCX0\">backlash from some of OU\u2019s stakeholders and from the general public,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW133816098 BCX0\">President Alden quickly and openly applauded the students, praising them for their involvement in Civil Rights matters.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW133816098 BCX0\">From this point on <em>The Post<\/em><\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW133816098 BCX0\">covered national events<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW133816098 BCX0\">relating to Civil Rights<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW133816098 BCX0\">often by focusing on the movement through the lens of President Alden. SCXW208457923 BCX0\">n a group of Black students handed Alden <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> list of demands<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> for changes to be made in OU&#8217;s culture and curriculum<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">.\u00a0<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">We know that Alden\u2019s effort towards reducing racism <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">on campus <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">was very<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">well <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">documented<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">by<\/span><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> The P<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">ost<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">, which <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">considered itself <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">to be<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">a neutral force<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">; <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">often in its pages <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">providing constructive criticism to those who diverge<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> from fairness<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> equality<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> (Whitten-Woodring, 2009). <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">However, it sho<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">u<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">ld be noted that since <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">response<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> from <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">Black<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\"> students <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">were often lacking in <em>The Post<\/em> narrative, at least one side of the developing story was not being <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">offered by <em>The Post<\/em><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208457923 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW147868659 BCX0\">The efforts of both <em>The Post<\/em> and President Alden were necessary forces that helped shed light on the ongoing issue of <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW147868659 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.law.umaryland.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=3567&amp;context=mlr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW147868659 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW147868659 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Civil Rights in the 1960s<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW147868659 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW147868659 BCX0\">. However, it is also important to understand how underrepresented groups tend to lose their voice in the media. Under Dr. LaPoe this semester we have delved deep into how the media often shapes the perceptions that we use in evaluating the state of the world around us. Through outside research and concepts from course material, we will explore this further.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW60805160 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/fbaum.unc.edu\/teaching\/articles\/Chong-Druckman-FramingTheory.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW60805160 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Framing theory<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> is the first concept that allows us to analyze the coverage of the Civil Rights Movement on campus. Through the framing of a white university president and white students, Ohio University <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">seemed to be<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> a very progressive and safe space for African Americans during the civil rights movement<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> Realistically, the mass amount of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">predominantly <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">white<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> coverage during the Civil Rights movement makes it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">very difficult<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> to find any firsthand accounts by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">Black<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> students<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">, giving us no real material gauge <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">success <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">or lack thereof <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">in the eyes of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">OU\u2019s Black<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\"> s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW60805160 BCX0\">tudents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">Additionally, <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW32835665 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/jcom.sissa.it\/article\/pubid\/JCOM_1804_2019_C02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW32835665 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Standpoint theory<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> informs us that t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">he <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">largely white<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> audience and student body shaped the general <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">perception<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> of the Civil Rights movement impressions on OU\u2019s campus<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">, with the media coverage co<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">vering<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> their standpoint or p<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">erspective<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">. This standpoint <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">likely differs<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> from <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">th<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">e views <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">Black<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> students <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW32835665 BCX0\">at this time<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">While this theory <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">originates<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\"> through feminism, it is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">widely applicable to other marginalized groups <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW32835665 BCX0\">Helpern<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW32835665 BCX0\">, 2019).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\">While <em>The Post<\/em> did use <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW30450444 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/eds-p-ebscohost-com.proxy.library.ohio.edu\/eds\/detail\/detail?vid=0&amp;sid=cfe541ca-5342-4140-8044-1e552d057de5%40redis&amp;bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWRzLWxpdmUmc2NvcGU9c2l0ZQ%3d%3d#AN=ejs30055421&amp;db=edo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Resonance<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\"> [OHIO login required]<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW30450444 BCX0\">, covering stories that held value to their audience, the lack of coverage from the Black perspective and over coverage of white support. However, as previously mentioned, it is a historically white student paper. In the wake of the Civil Rights Movement this became increasingly troubling as Black voices continued to be only heard in the background if at all. The Black Press was instrumental in providing an outlet for Black individuals to voice concerns and have their voices heard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">To better understand this, we can look to the work of Dr. Jinx<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\"> Broussard and Dr. Benjamin LaPoe<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">. In their work together they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">state<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\"> that<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\"> central motivation for the Black press\u2019 formation was to correct misinformation, fill holes by providing visibility, and become a voice to the oppressed and ignored<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">\u201d (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">LaPoe &amp; Broussard<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">, 2018, p. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">140<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208942998 BCX0\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW181455089 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW181455089 BCX0\">However, throughout most of the 1960s, and, certainly during the Alden years at OU, there were no designated Black press<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW181455089 BCX0\">outlets on campus from which we can gauge Black student perspective during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. It was not until the inclusion of a Black Studies Program in Ohio University&#8217;s academic curriculum\u2014which was one of the demands Black students had handed to President Alden\u2014that Black voices could be heard across campus as the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/media.library.ohio.edu\/digital\/collection\/studentnewspapers\/search\/searchterm\/Afro-American%20Affairs%20(Athens%2C%20Ohio)\/field\/subcol\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afro-American Affairs Newspaper<\/a><\/em> began publishing regularly at OU.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nevertheless, we can see that providing a platform through which Black perspectives could be published<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">and read in the OU community was already on the minds of OU&#8217;s Black student population even before the introduction of the Black Studies Program.<\/span><span SCXW140217852 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">middleman<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140217852 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140217852 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">Black<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140217852 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">students wanted <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140217852 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140217852 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">vehicle which The paper detailed feelings toward the university, national events, poems by both students and prominent Black activists, and songs, depicting experiences shared by the Black community.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW112133255 BCX0\"><em>The Black Bull<\/em> represented most importantly a space where Black students could speak freely for themselves instead of relying on <em>The Post<\/em> or the University President to speak for them.\u00a0The publishing of <em>The Black Bull<\/em> allowed them to see that their experiences, no matter how they differed from the news as it was presented by <em>The Post<\/em>,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW112133255 BCX0\">were okay to talk and write about.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW44829183 BCX0\">This is appropriately depicted on page 3 of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/media.library.ohio.edu\/digital\/collection\/archives\/id\/53015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Black Bull<\/a><\/em> when writer Larry Deering states,<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW61420287 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW61420287 BCX0\">\u201cAfter talking with one of the soul sisters on campus, and taking a deep soul-searching look at myself, I finally came to realize that I was so much like many of my Black brothers and sisters on campus who believed that what is not written according to the status quo (that being the white man&#8217;s media) was lewd and atrocious.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW61420287 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW61420287 BCX0\">Deering continues by saying that,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"TextRun SCXW221726585 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW221726585 BCX0\">I wasn&#8217;t taking into consideration that what is said and how it is said in this paper typifies the way our Black masses speak.<\/span><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to Deering, Black members of the community were primed to feel their depictions of reality were too harsh for the general public to read and digest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary-wiley-com.proxy.library.ohio.edu\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/j.1559-1816.2005.tb02184.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Dixon &amp; Maddox, 2005)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> [OHIO login required].<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> The consumption of <em>The Post<\/em> and the voice of President Alden unintentionally had promoted the general perspective and attitude on OU\u2019s campus that the Civil Rights activism was all going swell and that OU\u2019s Black student population\u2014indeed the Black population of the country\u2014had no grievances. However, with <em>The Black Bull<\/em>, community members were able to see past the efforts of priming and speak to their true convictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The ability for Black students to do this was absolutely instrumental to having a true sense of a voice. While <em>The Black Bull<\/em> publication did not last, it laid the groundwork for future publications like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/media.library.ohio.edu\/digital\/collection\/studentnewspapers\/search\/searchterm\/Afro-American%20Affairs%20(Athens%2C%20Ohio)\/field\/subcol\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Afro-American Affairs<\/a><\/em>, opening up a larger space for genuine experiences.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217661082 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217661082 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 1\">Putting it Together<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW217661082 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">President Vernon R. Alden\u2019s leadership during the Civil Rights Movement <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">served as a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\"> beacon of hope<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">during<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\"> a troubling time<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">His activism was absolutely crucial in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">shedding light on the racial injustice not just on campus but <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">around the country<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\"> Furthermore, <em>The Post<\/em><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\"> reflected the power of Alden\u2019s position, framing successes through his eyes. However, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">if <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">we<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\"> look <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">at this time <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">with a critical eye it is important to recognize <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">voices <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">unintentionally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151170608 BCX0\">brushed aside in the process were those of OU&#8217;s Black student and community members.\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW151170608 BCX0\">D<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW151170608 BCX0\">espite <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW151170608 BCX0\">the fact that<\/span> it was the Black population who were living through these experiences, their stories were told through the lens of white institutions and voices.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">When we listen to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">and amplify <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">marginalized voices we can <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">support the telling of authentic narratives. The true experiences had by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">Black members of society <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">were<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\"> one<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\"> of perseverance and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">strength<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">. It is a narrative that deserves to be heard<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\">as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110489617 BCX0\"> they are the heroes of their stories.
