Academic and Professional Background

I joined Ohio University in 2000 after three years as an Assistant Professor in the Marketing, Management, and Information Systems Department at the University of Central Arkansas. I was approved for promotion to Associate Professor (with tenure) on January 20, 2006. My academic preparation includes a Ph.D. (Business Administration) from the University of Illinois, an M.B.A. (Management) from the University of Memphis, and a B.S. (Business Administration, Computer Science) from Union University. Primary teaching responsibilities at Ohio University include undergraduate courses in Organizational Behavior and Managerial Decision Making. I also teach Introduction to Management and Creativity and Innovation. Prior to graduate school, I worked seven years for the Department of the Army at Milan Army Ammunition Plant. I was a computer specialist (five years), automation security specialist (two years), and the staff Total Quality Management facilitator (one-year concurrent assignment).

Family Notes

I married the former Susan Smith on August 23, 1986. Like me, she grew up in West Tennessee. We lived up in the same small hometown, but did not know each other (before we started dating) because she attended school in a neighboring town. After graduating from Bradford High School, Susan went to West Tennessee Business College for certification as a medical assistant. She worked in several specialties (otolaryngology, osteopathy, gastroentrology) for clinics in Tennessee, Illinois, and Arkansas. After homeschooling our son for several years, she shuttled him back and forth to Fairfield Christian Academy in Lancaster. She also worked for the school as a library assistant, handling lunch accounts, and as bus scheduler. Now that our son has graduated, she works full time as a shift supervisor in the school's child care program. She is a good cook and an even better baker. She enjoys Hallmark Channel movies and also likes to read.

We have one child - Adam Robert - born December 30, 1998. Adam graduated from Fairfield Christian Academy in May 2018. As a student there, he ran cross country and track (4 x 800 relay, distance). He also played the trombone for a brief period, but found an outlet for his musical talent by participating in choir (note: he did not get this interest from his father). He served five terms as Student Council Chaplain and one as Representative-at-Large. He volunteered at Maywood Mission. He was also a delegate to Buckeye Boys State.

Adam is currently in his first year of seminary studies Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He graduated from Union University in May 2022 with a B.A. in Pastoral Ministry and a minor in Management (yes, his father forced this one). Adam's first preaching opportunities came at Connect Church (in my hometown of Milan, Tennessee) and at Salem Baptist Church (pastored by our friend, Joel Pigg) during Spring 2019. Since then, he has preached numerous times at churches in Selmer, Nunnelly, Brownsville, Union City and Milan, Tennessee, and also in Pomeroy and McArthur, Ohio. He recently had the opportunity to preach at our home church, First Baptist Lancaster. He thoroughly enjoys studying Koine Greek and Hebrew and has taught himself how to play the yukele.

Although his entertainment choices have matured a bit, Adam still loves Star Wars and various spin-off series, and all things Marvel and DC. He enjoys social media (e.g., Snapchat and Instagram), but is more likely to be following sports on the ESPN app or listening to Dr. Al Mohler's The Briefing podcast. He loves cats and just about all sports (he got these interests from his father). He is a HUGE fan of Baylor University sports -- and was thrilled when the men's basketball team won the 2021 NCAA Basketball Tournament -- and the Big 12 Conference. Also like his father, Adam enjoys movies.

Personal Interests

While my son was in high school, I did not have much time to pursue personal activities. Now that my wife and I are empty nesters, that is changing. My hobbies include sports (see below), geocaching, and crossword puzzles. I also enjoy movies, music, reading, and computers. I am actively involved at Lancaster First Baptist Church, serving as a life group leader and a deacon. I have also been a member of the church finance committee.

I enjoy most sports, particularly women's collegiate volleyball. I usually take a few trips each season to see volleyball teams coached by friends at Austin Peay, Kent State, Marquette, or Penn State or to watch my beloved Fighting Illini Volleyball. Now that Geoff Carlston is back coaching Ohio University Volleyball, I am renewing my support for the Bobcats. In addition to all Illinois sports, I also am devoted to Florida State football and Kansas and North Carolina men's basketball.

I do most of my movie watching at home (pay-per-view and DVD rental). I also enjoy listening to a wide variety of music, although I generally dislike Country and Hip-Hop/Rap. At work, I usually listen to contemporary jazz through Amazon Prime Music. I have written several journal articles, as well as supplements and various textbook features for John Wiley & Sons, on using movies, television, and music as pedagogical tools.

I am actively involved in the Christian Business Faculty Association, where I am serving my second term on the board of directors in the role of Program Chair. I have full responsibility for managing the academic program for our annual conference. I have three publications, including one co-authored with my son, in the organization's two academic journals. I was honored to receive CBFA's Sharon Johnson Award in 2019 for my work developing scholarship in the organization. In 2023, I will assume the role of editor for the Christian Business Academy Review. I formerly served as an associate editor for Management Teaching Review and continue to serve on their editorial board.

My background in computer science makes me just dangerous enough to tinker with computer software/applications. I write all my HTML code and attribute what little knowledge I have to my friend and computer mentor Rich Kern. Take a look at his Division I Volleyball Website. He was recently inducted into the NCAA Volleyball Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.
