You found the Hawthorn!
One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.
Crataegus spp. — 🐦 Hawthorn is like a forest-edge bed-and-breakfast with security included: its fruits provide food for birds, while its long thorns help discourage hungry deer.
Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically along forest edges and in open areas.
