Pignut Hickory

You found the Pignut Hickory!

One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.

Carya glabra — 🏔️ Pignut hickory is at home on dry, rocky uplands. Its distinctive pear-shaped nuts are dispersed by critters, helping new hickories move across the forest.

Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically on dry, rocky uplands.
