One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.

Ulmus rubra โ€” ๐ŸŒฟ The โ€œslipperyโ€ part of slippery elm is hidden inside the tree! Its inner bark contains a slick substance called mucilage and has a long history of medicinal use.

Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus โ€” The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run โ€” typically in moist valleys and along lower slopes.
