You found the Sugar Maple!
One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.
Acer saccharum — 🌑 Sugar maple is a master of patience. Young trees can persist beneath a deeply shaded forest canopy, waiting for an opening that provides enough light to grow upward.
Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically on shaded slopes and in valleys.
