Black Oak

You found the Black Oak!

One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.

Quercus velutina — 🔥 Black oak is a tough upland survivor. It occupies dry forests and can capitalize on disturbance when an opening in the canopy brings more sunlight to the forest floor.

Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically in dry upland forests.
