You found the Black Walnut!
One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.
Juglans nigra — ⚔️ Black walnut doesn’t just compete for sunlight. This deep-rooted native is allelopathic, meaning it can chemically influence which plants successfully grow around it.
Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically in rich valleys and along lower slopes.
