Chestnut Oak

You found the Chestnut Oak!

One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.

Quercus montana — ⛰️ Chestnut oak is built for the high ground. It thrives on dry upland sites and thin soils, patiently waiting for a canopy opening before making its move upward.

Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically on dry ridge tops and upper slopes.
