You found the Osage-Orange!
One of 15 trees in the PBIO Tree Hunt.
Maclura pomifera — 🦥 Osage-orange has prehistoric vibes! Its unusual fruit may be a relic of ancient dispersal relationships, including a proposed connection with extinct giant ground sloths.
Where it grows: look for it in the natural woods around campus — The Ridges, Baker Preserve, and Strouds Run — typically along field edges and old fencerows.
